Scottie did not know what to expect when he joined the Chicago Bulls for his first training camp in the summer of 1987. The Bulls had Michael Jordan, the greatest player in the world. The Bull's coach Doug Collins decided to use him as a backup small forward behind starter Brad Sellers. In his first season Scottie played average with an averaged 7.9 points a game. He showed abilities as a ball handler and passer that were better than many of the leagues point guards. His jumping ability and quickness quickly got compared to Michael Jordan's. He became a solid rebound player and a standout defensive player. He showed that with more experience he could be one of the top players in the league and could help take some of the pressure off Jordan.
Scottie was excited for training camp in 1988 but he discovered that he needed surgery to repair a herniated disk. He was forced to miss the entire preseason and had to sit out the first 8 games of the regular season. When he returned he continued to substiute for Sellers. On December 27 Collins named him starting small forward. He began emerging as one of the top players in the league.

Phil Jackson became the Bull's coach for the 1989-90 season. He quickly came up with an offense that was made to take advantage of Scottie and Jordan's unusual talents. Scottie became even better with the new offense and now averaged 16.5 points a game and his defense was even more impressive. He had blocked 101 shots and had 211 steals, the third best total in the NBA.
Scottie emerged as a superstar and helped place the Bulls among the NBA's elite. He helped the Bulls win 6 NBA titles. In 1992 he helped the U.S. "Dream Team" win a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. In 1994 after Jordan's retirement, Scottie becomes team leader and has his best season ever. He was named MVP of the All Star game.
